Devo Moguls Weekend (and some updates)

Hi MSTC Devo Parents,

This week I've had several conversations with non-skier friends asking when do you think the season will be over.  I keep telling them with all the snow we've received recently, I have no idea & I don't want to think about it - I like to focus on all the great spring days we still have ahead.  However, the reality is that we are entering the last weekend of February, which means we are only a few weeks away from the end of this Devo season.  The great news is that in the last few weekends, we have some of the best events lined up.

February 22 - 23: Avery’s Mogul Rebellion Weekend

As I'm sure you've heard before, we teach Devo in part to help the next generation of young athletes develop a passion for being on the mountain.   The primary objectives of the program are to develop a lifelong love of skiing/riding, foster competitive energy, as well as forge friendships that last far beyond the last chair.   The MSTC Devo program allows for season over season growth in all these areas and we as the coaching staff have the privilege to watch young athletes grow.  This was evident by one of our past athletes, Avery Lafferty.  Through her time in Devo she made countless friends, had a blast & never wanted to be off the hill, and ignited a passion for skiing moguls.

Avery learned that mogul skiing was about being tough and adapting with every turn. Just over three years ago Avery was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor (a diffuse midline glioma, DMG).  She suffered some set-backs with 4 brain surgeries, radiation, targeted chemo and immunotherapy, but through it all each time she made her way back to skiing and mogul competitions.  She became known as Mount Snow’s Cancer Rebel because despite her cancer she refused to be held back by her disease and rebelled at the limitation that came with every new symptom.  At the end of last year’s ski season Avery’s cancer began to spread more rapidly.  Regardless, she was able to make one last trip up north to ski some springtime bumps with her friends & family before harder symptoms set in.   She passed in July rebelling until her final breath.

This weekend we’ll honor Avery Lafferty’s determination and perseverance against impossible odds with our annual MSTC Devo mogul weekend/event.

Saturday will be a training day.  The mogul course on Lower Ex will be open to Devo teams.  Our coaches will use this opportunity to introduce groups to a bump line and a moguls jump.  Moguls coaches will be on-hand to provide tips & help us navigate the bumps.

Sunday we will have a fun run event where parents can take a peek at their athletes in the course & grab some photos

 * Time slots for some official organization will be announced on Saturday [coaches will provide an official time at Sunday drop-off]

We are also partnering with the Lafferty's & Avery's Little Army [https://www.averyslittlearmy.org/] to use this event to spread her story, her love of the moguls, and awareness of the charity founded in her name.  An official Avery's Little Army tent will be at the course, merch will be available for purchase (eg: stickers) and QR codes that bring people to their mission/story and a place to donate. We encourage everyone to check it out.

Just like Avery, our goal for this fun weekend is to see how our athletes can push themselves and see what they’re capable of if they too refuse to accept any limits.

March 15 - 16: Last Weekend / End of Season Party

Sunday is our Wrap-party at the Grand Summit Ballroom.  We will have a few snacks, hand out some awards,  & celebrate the season with an amazing slideshow.

Thinking about next season, if your child is interested in transitioning to another discipline (eg: devo all-mountain to Freeski or Moguls) or program (eg: devo to comp), please let us know.

There will be a sign-up for comp team tryouts in the near future.

If you have any questions or concerns, please speak with your athletes coaches or come find us at drop-off or pick-up.  We are always there: Black Jackets - Pink or Blue helmets.

Think snow!  See you all on Saturday AM.
